Stavros Mantis | pura musica artists

Born in Nicosia, Cyprus, Stavros Mantis began his musical journey as a bassoonist, performing for several years with the State Youth Orchestra of the Republic of Cyprus. His vocal studies began in Athens and continued in Italy under the guidance of Gianfranco Cecchele. Since 2014, he has been mentored by Teresa Perdoncin and has further refined his craft through masterclasses, opera studios, and workshops, including the Mascagni Academy in Livorno and the Accademia del Teatro Stabile and Teatro Regio di Torino.

Stavros Mantis is celebrated for his baritone voice, characterized by considerable power, range, and warmth, with a dark, round timbre that remains consistent across his register. His exceptional legato technique and commanding stage presence make him ideally suited to roles in the Verdi and verismo repertoires. In addition, he possesses remarkable comedic talent.

He made his stage debut in 2008 as Masetto in Don Giovanni at Teatro Alfieri di Asti. Since then, his repertoire has expanded to include roles such as Don Giovanni and Leporello in Don Giovanni, Papageno in The Magic Flute, Giorgio Germont in La Traviata, Marcello in La Bohème, Gianni Schicchi, Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana, Tonio in I Pagliacci, Scarpia in Tosca, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, and Belcore in L’elisir d’amore, among others.

Recent highlights of his career include his debut as Ezio in Attila at Teatro Verdi di Busseto, Il Carpentiere in Il Piccolo Marat at Angers Nantes Opéra, Alfio in the European premiere of the original version of Cavalleria Rusticana at Teatro Goldoni di Livorno, and Schendrian in Cantata del Caffè. Upcoming engagements include his role debut as Marchese d’Obigny at Angers Nantes Opéra and Opéra de Rennes, and Jago at the Romanian National Opera Cluj-Napoca. On December 18, 2023, Stavros made his cinematic debut as Alfio in Mario Menicagli’s opera-film Dodici Anni Dopo, directed by Valerio Groppa.

Stavros Mantis is equally dedicated to the concert and sacred music repertoire, performing as a soloist in works such as Mascagni’s and Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, Brahms’s Ein Deutsches Requiem, and Mozart’s Requiem.

An award-winning artist, he has earned top honors in several international competitions, including the VI International Opera Competition of the City of Ferrara and the XIV International Competition „Spazio Musica“ in Orvieto. Additionally, he was a finalist in the inaugural Competition for Mascagni Voices.
