Matheus França was born in Brasília, Brazil, and received his musical education at the University of Brasília, where he completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Orchestral and Choral Conducting. He also studied Music Education and Classical Singing, and worked on his vocal training with Professor Dr. Irene Bentley.

A Voice Shaped by a Broad Musical Perspective

His first experiences with opera came during his university years, when he took part in productions including Pergolesi’s La Serva Padrona and Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia. At the same time, he developed a strong interest in the concert repertoire, performing works such as Mozart’s Vesperae solennes de confessore and Requiem, Beethoven’s Chorfantasie, and Verdi’s Requiem.

During these formative years, França had the opportunity to work with and learn from a number of distinguished conductors, including Zubin Mehta, Stojan Kuret, Dietmar Wiedemann, and Roberto Minczuk. These experiences, together with his training as both a conductor and singer, have given him a broad musical perspective that continues to inform his work on stage.

In 2014, he joined the Lyrical Choir of the Municipal Theatre of São Paulo. This marked an important step in his development and also the beginning of his career as a soloist. Working with artists such as Kurt Rydl, Luiz-Ottavio Faria, and Marianne Cornetti, he further developed his voice and began taking on increasingly demanding roles. He made his operatic debut as Zaccaria in Verdi’s Nabucco, followed by Nourabad in Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de Perles.

From Mozart and Rossini to Verdi and Wagner

Since then, França has built a wide-ranging bass repertoire, moving comfortably between the Italian and German traditions. His roles include Padre Guardiano in La Forza del Destino, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, Fafner, Hunding, King René, Basilio, Zaccaria, and the Grand Inquisitor. He has also shown his versatility in roles such as Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro and Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, combining vocal presence with a strong sense of character and stage.

His career has taken him to major venues and opera houses in Japan, the Czech Republic, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, and Switzerland. He is currently a member of the ensemble of the Wiener Staatsoper, where he continues to expand his repertoire and gain experience across a broad range of roles.
