Karina Flores is an Armenian soprano who has earned international acclaim for her powerful voice and dynamic stage presence. Born in Shachty, Russia, she began her musical journey at the Shakhty Music School before studying at the Rostov Conservatory of Rachmaninov with Professor Margarita Hudaverdova. She continued her training in Italy at the prestigious Accademia di Santa Cecilia, studying with the renowned soprano Renata Scotto.
Karina Flores’ career took off after she won top prizes at several major international competitions, including the Flaviano Labo competition in Piacenza (2008), the G. Vishnevskaya competition in Moscow (2008), and the Ottavio Ziino competition in Rome (2008). She quickly made a name for herself in leading opera houses across Europe. Her performance as Adriana Lecouvreur at the Landestheater Innsbruck was a defining moment, earning her a nomination for “Best Female Performer” at the 2016 Vienna Music Theatre Awards.
To date, Karina Flores has sung a wide range of roles, from Madama Butterfly and Aida to Tosca and Desdemona. She has graced stages like the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, the Teatro dell’ Arena di Verona, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Some of her highlights include her portrayal of Amelia in Un ballo in maschera in Innsbruck, her debut as Madama Butterfly at the Teatro Politeama di Lecce, and her debut with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., where she sang Britten’s War Requiem under Gianandrea Noseda.
One of Karina Flores’s most successful roles is Katarina Ismailova in Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtzensk, a role that she sang with Helikon Opera, conducted by Valery Kiryanov and directed by Dimitry Bertman, in Tel Aviv and at the Opera de Massy in Paris, conducted by Konstantin Chudovsky and directed by Dimitry Bertman.
Other notable roles have included Leonora in Il Trovatore at the Teatro Regio di Torino and her performance in Verdi’s Messa da Requiem in Kassel. Karina Flores has also taken on major concert works, including singing at the Grand Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow and performing Shostakovich’s 14th Symphony in St. Petersburg and Berlin.
In recent seasons, Karina Flores has continued to impress audiences with her performances as Leonora in La Forza del Destino at the Klosterneuburg Opera Festival, Aida in Karlsruhe, and Elisabetta in Don Carlo in Klosterneuburg. She also returned to her beloved role of Madama Butterfly in Yerevan.
