
Andrew Joon Choi is a classically trained Korean American conductor based in Princeton, New Jersey. He was awarded the prestigious Neeme Järvi Prize at the 2018 Gstaad Music Festival & Academy, won second prize at the NRTA (National Radio Television Albania) Conducting Competition in 2019, and received third prize at the Ionel Perlea International Opera Conducting Competition in 2021 in Romania.
Joon has conducted a wide range of orchestras across Europe. In Switzerland, he has appeared with the Sinfonieorchester Basel, Kammerorchester Basel, Basel Sinfonietta, Musikkollegium Winterthur, and the Gstaad Festival Orchestra. In Liechtenstein, he has worked with the Sinfonieorchester Liechtenstein. Other engagements include the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna in Austria, the LEAD! Festival Orchestra in Finland, the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra, Josef Kajetán Tyl Theater, and Filharmonie Hradec Králové in the Czech Republic, the Staatstheater Cottbus, Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester Mannheim, and Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie in Germany, as well as the Pazardzhik Symphony Orchestra and Rousse Philharmonic Orchestra in Bulgaria.
From 2018 until January 2020, Andrew Joon Choi served as assistant conductor of the Basel Sinfonietta, a contemporary arts organization known for bringing modern classical music closer to audiences through innovative and provocative programming. The Sinfonietta is widely recognized as the only orchestra of its kind to dedicate every program of its season exclusively to contemporary classical music.
Highlights of Joon’s 2019 to 2021 seasons include his debut with the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at Wien Modern 2019, performing alongside Baldur Brönnimann at the Musikverein Vienna. He also led concerts with the Basel Sinfonietta and the Sinfonieorchester Liechtenstein, collaborating with renowned soloists Claire Huangci and the Janoska Ensemble at the Vaduz Classic 2021 festival in Liechtenstein.
In 2022, he conducted the Swiss premiere of Olga Neuwirth’s work Die Stadt ohne Juden with the Sinfonieorchester Basel. That same year, he worked alongside Jukka Pekka Saraste, Hannu Lintu, Dalia Stasevska, and Esa Pekka Salonen at the LEAD! Music Festival in Fiskars, Finland. 2023 saw his US debut with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra.
Choi is a graduate of the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, where he studied under the mentorship of Johannes Schlaefli. Prior to his work and studies in Europe, he studied orchestral conducting at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore with Marin Alsop, Gustav Meier, and Markand Thakar.
