Lázaro Calderón is an acclaimed tenor known for his impactful performances on operatic and concert stages throughout Europe and the US. Born in Puerto Rico, Calderón made notable debuts at Carnegie Hall in Haydn’s *Mass in the Time of War* and at Lincoln Center in Mozart’s *Requiem* at Avery Fisher Hall. He won the prize for Best Italian Aria at the Puerto Rico District Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and was a finalist in the 2010 NYLOT competition.
His extensive operatic repertoire includes leading roles such as Duca di Mantua in Rigoletto, Des Grieux in Manon, Rodolfo in La Bohème, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Romeo in Romeo et Juliette, Alfred in Die Fledermaus, Don Jose in Carmen, Tebaldo in I Capuleti e I Montecchi, Steuermann in Der Fliegende Holländer, and Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly. Other notable roles include Ruggero in La Rondine performed at Sarasota Opera and Don Luis de Haro in the Zarzuela El Barberillo de Lavapies, which he premiered in Puerto Rico.
Calderón has worked with renowned directors and singers such as Marcello Giordani, Tito Capobianco, Anthony Laciura, and Michael Scarola. He has collaborated with esteemed conductors including Alberto Veronesi, Steven Crawford, Victor DeRenzi, Enrique Patron de Rueda, and Willie Anthony Waters. Calderón shared the Carnegie Hall stage with tenor Jonas Kaufmann and soprano Angela Gheorghiu in a production of Adriana Lecouvreur.
In 2012, Lázaro Calderón earned great accolades after his debut in San Jose, California, with Opera Bravura. He received rave reviews for his role as Riccardo Percy in Anna Bolena with Opera in the Heights in Houston, where a critic described him as “…one of the purest, most brilliant tenor voices working today.”
In the same year, Calderón was invited to perform the role of Camille de Rosillon in Teatro de La Opera’s production of The Merry Widow in Puerto Rico. He returned to Opera in the Heights for I Capuleti e i Montecchi as Tebaldo. In 2013 followed his European debut as Duca in Rigoletto with the South Bohemian Opera at the Cesky Krumlov Festival. He was invited back in 2014 and 2015 to perform the role of Don José in Carmen. A further notable addition to his repertoire was the role of Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana with Maestro Mario De Rose conducting the South Bohemian Orchestra in the Czech Republic. In 2017 followed his debut as Manrico in Verdi’s Trovatore, with reinvitations for the two consecutive seasons.
In July 2014, Calderón gave his US as Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana with Maryland Lyric Opera. He was subsequently invited to debut in January 2015 at the Prague National Theatre in the same role. In September 2015, he expanded his French repertoire by performing the dramatic role of Faust in Gounod’s Faust at Theater Nordhausen, Germany and was immediately invited to the sing the same role at the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater Schwerin in the 2018/19 season.
The tenor used the forced artistic break during the pandemic to approach roles in the more dramatic repertoire such as Calaf in Turandot, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Radames in Aida and Alvaro in La Forza del Destino.
