Lana Suran | pura musica

Lana Suran, an award-winning Swedish pianist, is recognized as one of the leading Scandinavian pianists of her generation. Described by the Augsburger Allgemeine as “simply an outstanding artist,” her performances are noted for their deep emotional resonance and tonal nuance, delivering powerful and personal interpretations across a wide repertoire.

Her artistic journey reflects a commitment to natural growth without compromise. “Making music for me,” she says, “is about evoking emotions, which demands complete dedication.” Fluent in six languages, her cosmopolitan outlook influences her recital programs and chamber music explorations. Her repertoire list encompasses the great landmarks of the keyboard literature, including Beethoven’s ‘Diabelli’ Variations, Chopin’s Ballades and Schumann’s Humoreske and such 20th-century classics as Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No.2 and Prokofiev’s late piano sonatas.

Lana has collaborated with composers like James MacMillan and Frederic Rzewski, and has performed pieces by Thomas Adès and Lera Auerbach. Passionate about chamber music, she values programming as a defining aspect of her artistry.

Recent highlights include performances at the Art of the Piano festival, Yellow Barn Festival, and the International Musicians Seminar at Prussia Cove. She debuted at Flagey in Brussels in 2021, and returned in 2023 with the Ars Nova Ensemble. As a concerto soloist, she has worked with the Orchestre Chambre Royal de Wallonie, Sweden’s Dalasinfoniettan, the Listening Collectif and such conductors as Daniel Blendulf, Vahan Mardirossian and Alexei Ogrintchouk. Her 2024 schedule includes a debut at the Lake George Music Festival and a performance at the Antwerp Spring Festival.

Born in Stockholm in 1992 to Russian and Kurdish parents, Lana began piano lessons at five and soon attended Stockholm’s Lilla Akademien. After early successes in Scandinavian competitions, she studied in the U.S. at Walnut Hill School for the Arts and the New England Conservatory, followed by the Mannes School of Music in New York and the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen.

Currently an Artist in Residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium, Lana has worked with distinguished artists like Leif Ove Andsnes and Vladimir Feltsman. She has a history of competition successes, including first prize at the Oxana Yablonskaya International Piano Competition in 2023 and the First Swedish Steinway Competition in 2001.

Lana resides in Berlin and Stockholm, pursuing postgraduate studies with Professor Kouyoumdjian at Vienna’s University of Music and Performing Arts. Her upcoming engagements include a UK tour and concerto debuts in Europe, the United States, and South America. “I am inspired by my mentors to stay true to myself and explore new creative opportunities,” she says.
